Tsuyoshi Nishioka Suffers Fractured Fibula

For the Twins, Thursday afternoon was a double whammy. Not only did they lose to the Yankees by a 4-3 final score; they also lost infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka to a fractured leg.

Nishioka was covering second in the seventh inning when Nick Swisher slid into his leg, attempting to break up a double play. Nishioka got a throw off but then fell to the ground, and shortly afterward was removed from the game. Swisher apologized and the Twins have maintained that his slide was clean, so there aren't any hard feelings, but Nishioka was diagnosed with a fractured left fibula as a result of the play, and he's set to miss at least the next month of the season.

To take Nishioka's place on the roster, the Twins have recalled infielder Luke Hughes. Between Hughes and Matt Tolbert, it's unknown who will get more playing time at second until Nishioka's able to return, but the recent Japanese import will surely be missed despite his slow start to the season.
