The Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees on Friday afternoon, 9-6, for their first victory of the season. While it wasn't a must-win game for the Red Sox, who still have 155 games to play, it was as close as it could be this early in the season.
Yankees Vs. Red Sox: Boston Prevails For First Win Of The Season
The Red Sox were able to pounce on Yankees' starter Phil Hughes, who only made it through two innings, giving up six earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Dustin Pedroia started the barrage with a high home run over the Green Monster in the first inning, and he followed that up with a two-run single in the second. Adrian Gonzalez and David Ortiz also followed with RBI singles, putting Boston up 6-3. The Red Sox would add a run in the fifth on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia double, and two runs in the seventh on a J.D. Drew single for the final margin.
Boston starter John Lackey had his second consecutive poor outing, but he stayed in the game for five innings, long enough to pick up his first win of the season. He gave up six earned runs, including the 616th home run of Alex Rodriguez's career, a solo shot to tie the game at 6-6. The Red Sox' bullpen fared much better, though, throwing four scoreless innings. Jonathan Papelbon fanned two for his first save of the season.
The series will continue tomorrow, with Ivan Nova pitching for the Yankees against Boston's Clay Buchholz.
