By the time Uncle Mo finally hit the track in the 2011 Wood Memorial, betting had shifted the line so far in his favor it didn’t appear the thoroughbred would face any challenge. Uncle Mo entered the started gate as an astounding 1-9 favorite, with Toby’s Corner holding the second-best odds at 23-1. While the Wood Memorial serves as a tuneup for the Kentucky Derby, the level of competition for Uncle Mo wasn’t expected to be too great.

But it wasn’t to be for Uncle Mo, who had never been challenged throughout his racing career. Uncle Mo never found another gear down the stretch as Toby’s Corner and Arthur’s Tale reeled him in from the outside in the mile and an eighth Wood Memorial, finishing off an incredible magnitude. Toby’s Corner came on incredibly strong, passing what appeared to be the final field with the finish line in sight.
When it was all over, Uncle Mo, the 1-9 favorite, had finished third, behind winner Toby’s Corner and second-place finisher Arthur’s Tale. Uncle Mo’s loss throws the Kentucky Derby into a tailspin, with no clear favorite after his falter on Saturday in what should have been an easy race at Aqueduct.
