Mashing up two Adam Rubin tweets (because we have the technology) regarding the latest Ike Davis news:
Ike Davis Placed On DL, Prospect Fernando Martinez Called Up
Ike Davis to DL. They’re calling it a left ankle sprain and bone bruise. Fernando Martinez active.
Davis hitting the DL isn’t unexpected, though it’s certainly unwelcome, considering that he leads the Mets in homers, ribbies, on-basies, and also sluggies. As long as he’s on the shelf, Daniel Murphy’s probably the Mets’ first baseman, with rookie Justin Turner becoming the every-day second baseman.
Not so long ago, Fernando Martinez was the Mets’ top hitting prospect, but his star has dimmed after a failed trial with the big club in 2009 and a pedestrian triple-A campaign in 2010. But he’s still only 22 and was off to a good start this spring, so it’s too early to give up on him.
Martinez is an outfielder, though, so it’s hard to see him getting a great deal of action in Davis’s absence. More likely, he’ll serve as a left-handed bat off the bench and occasionally spell Carlos Beltran in right field and Jason Bay in left.
