After Josh Johnson and the Florida Marlins knocked off Roy Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night, one figured that the Marlins might have a little momentum they could carry into Wednesday's series finale. But they lost any momentum they might have had in the later innings, when the Phillies rallied for a 5-3 win.
Phillies Vs. Marlins: Jimmy Rollins The Hero In Philadelphia’s Comeback Win
This one started off well for the Fish. Against Cliff Lee, Hanley Ramirez took a pitch deep and out to left center for a solo home run -- just his second of the season -- in the bottom of the first inning. And though the Marlins wouldn't score again for a long time, the Phillies had no answer for Ricky Nolasco, who began his start with six scoreless frames. The Phillies didn't get a runner into scoring position until the fourth, and Nolasco navigated his way through whatever trouble he faced.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Marlins found some insurance when John Buck singled home one run and Mike Stanton drove in another with a sacrifice fly. Ahead 3-0, Florida had to be feeling good that it would come away with the series.
Back came Philadelphia, though. The seventh inning saw Pete Orr drive home the team's first run on a double, shortly after first baseman Gaby Sanchez made a fielding error. Ross Gload followed with an RBI groundout to narrow the score to 3-2. And the Phillies knotted things up in the eighth when Shane Victorino stood in against Mike Dunn and ripped a low line drive over the left-field fence for a solo homer.
The Marlins threatened in the bottom of the eighth before Buck grounded into a rally-killing double play, and then the game was off to the ninth, when Jimmy Rollins came up huge. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Rollins faced Leo Nunez and lined a base hit into right field to score a pair and put Philadelphia on top 5-3. They wouldn't add any more, but Ryan Madson had little trouble putting the Marlins away in the bottom half for the save, completing the comeback.
So a big series in the NL East ends up with Philadelphia winning twice, Florida once. Now three games in front, the Phillies will travel to Atlanta, while the Marlins will fly to D.C.
