Kenny Dalglish Becomes Permanent Liverpool Manager

King Kenny is back. Well, King Kenny was already back but now it's on a more official basis. Kenny Dalglish took over as Liverpool manager following the conclusion of Roy Hodgson's ill-fated spell at the club, and the Reds have done so well under his guidance that the ownership has signed him up to a three-year contract to manage Liverpool. Dalglish's assistant Steve Clarke is also being tendered a three-year deal.

Dalglish, of course, is an Anfield legend, having won eight league titles during his spell at the club (as a player, manager, and player-manager) and scoring 118 goals in 355 league appearances. He’s also one of the five managers to have ever won the Premier League, having led Blackburn Rovers to the title in 1994/95 season. In a statement on the club’s official website, Dalglish described how he was only expecting to hold the fort down for the rest of the season:

I said when I took the job on in January that I was just happy to help the club out for the remainder of the season. Now the owners have decided in their wisdom that they want me to stay a little longer and it’s fantastic news for both myself and Steve Clarke that we have signed these contracts.

Both John and Tom [Werner] have taken their time to assess what was best for the football club and bring in the people they wanted to take the club forward. They are both winners, but understand what the supporters want from a Liverpool side and the way that we should go about things. This is a unique football club and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to help build something special here again.

Although Liverpool are vastly improved over the Roy Hodgson days (since Dalglish took the helm, only Chelsea have earned more points), we shouldn't be pegging them for next year's title just yet. There are still plenty of holes to fill in the roster, and they look set for an interesting summer.
