FC Dallas’ ‘Major’ Player Announcement? Oh, It’s Just Brek Shea Re-Signing

FC Dallas announced a "major" player announcement on Wednesday, fueling rampant speculation that it might herald the signing of a big-name international. Turns out, it's something far less interesting: Brek Shea has signed a contract extension that will keep him under FC Dallas' control through 2015.

This undoubtedly fails the “major announcement” test, as Shea wasn’t about to be heading anywhere anytime soon, but it is another example of MLS investing in young talent. Shea, a former No. 2 overall SuperDraft pick, is just 21 and coming off a breakout season in which he registered five goals and four assists. He has two goals and an assist this season. Shea has made two appearances for the United States national team.

“Re-signing a player of Brek Shea’s impressive ability and potential shows the great vision of FC Dallas leadership and proves the League’s continuing commitment to retaining top, young American players,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber in an FC Dallas press release.
