On Saturday, the Minnesota Twins had plenty of opportunities to avoid losing their seventh straight game. But as teams with the worst record in the league tend to do, the Twins failed to capitalize on them, and the Blue Jays ended up with a 9-3 win in 11 innings.
Blue Jays Vs. Twins: Twinkies Lose Seventh Straight After Falling In Extras, 9-3
The Twins took a 2-1 lead in the first, but over the course of the game, they stranded 12 runners. Despite giving up 10 hits over 5.2 innings, Blue Jays starter Jo-Jo Reyes surrendered only three runs.
A terrific outing from Twins starter Nick Blackburn (7-2/3 innings, 3 runs, 8 strikeouts) was eventually squandered by the Minnesota bullpen. With the score 3-3 in the top of the 11th, Jim Hoey gave up three runs without getting an out. Jose Mijares took the ball and was no more effective, surrendering two runs of his own without an out. By the time Alex Burnett retired the side, the Twins were in a six-run hole.
This is the fourth straight win for the Blue Jays, who improve to 19-20 on the year and sit four games behind the A.L. East-leading Rays. The Twins, meanwhile, fall to a major league-worst 12-25. They've lost 13 of their last 16 games, and their -82 run differential is at least twice as bad as any other team in the majors. Nothing is going right for Ron Gardenhire and company.
