Green Bay Packers NFL Draft WarRoom

Mocking the Draft wants to introduce you to an new article series taking a closer look at each team’s draft workings. The WarRoom articles will give you a glimpse at the recent draft history and the decision-making structure of each NFL team. We will also include our thoughts about the structure and draft history.

Offensive Scheme: Mike McCarthy is one of the most innovative offensive minds in the NFL. He does a nice job of running different game plans and keeping the defense on their toes. McCarthy likes to feature a shotgun attack with 3 wide receivers and a tight end. The tight end is a big part of the offense and the more athletic the better. While the shotgun is a staple of the offense, there are several formations that key on a power running game. He has utilized big fullbacks like John Kuhn and Quinn Johnson. Basically, McCarthy is always looking for weapons and is creative enough to utilize them.

Defensive Scheme: Much like McCarthy, Dom Capers is a creative and attacking defensive coordinator. He employs a 3-4 defensive scheme that specializes in creating pressure. The pressure comes from many different areas including linebackers and defensive backs. Capers might be the best at working with what he is given but he covets players that can create pressure.

Thoughts: It is difficult to speak negatively about a team that has added Aaron Rodgers, B.J. Raji, and Clay Matthews through the draft. As well as, great late round/undrafted pickups such as Sam Shields and James Starks but there are some bad picks that standout. Early selections like Brian Brohm, Pat Lee, and Justin Harrell have all stung this franchise.

With all that being said, this group has added great pieces that lead to a Super Bowl title. The later round selections were vital to their success as it allowed them to overcome many injuries. Going forward it will be important for the Packers to avoid early round flops and continue to find late round gems. They will continue to be aggressive as they look to add impact players.
