Last week, Yankees reliever Rafael Soriano was sidelined by discomfort in his elbow. An MRI revealed inflammation but no structural damage. After taking a few days off, Soriano threw an inning of relief against the Red Sox on Friday.
Rafael Soriano Still Fighting Elbow Soreness
But Soriano isn’t yet in the clear. The discomfort has come back. Via the Daily News:
Soriano said it was the same soreness that shut him down last week. The righthander last pitched Friday night against the Red Sox, it was his first appearance since May 8.
“The other night I feel fine, the next day I feel it,” said Soriano, who signed a three-year, $35 million deal with the Yanks in the offseason. “I played catch and it feel tender the next day.”
Soriano is going to miss the Yankees' two-game series against the Rays, beginning Monday. He's also going to throw a bullpen session on Monday. If the bullpen goes well, Soriano anticipates being available on Wednesday. If the bullpen does not go well, the Yankees will probably place the set-up man on the disabled list.
The good news for the Yankees is that Mariano Rivera, Joba Chamberlain and David Robertson have combined for a 2.55 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 53 innings. So while a healthy, effective Soriano would be a useful piece, he isn't exactly a team keystone.
