For 16 teams in the CONCACAF Champions League, they need to win a two-legged playoff in the preliminary stage to qualify for the group stage of the tournament. The eight preliminary stage winners then join the eight teams that earned direct entry to the group stage where the tournament to determine the best club team in North America, Central America and the Caribbean starts in earnest.
CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Draw On Wednesday
The 16 teams in the preliminary stage of the 2011-2012 CONACAF Champions League will learn their opponents for that round on Wednesday, when CONCACAF holds the draw for the preliminary stage. The teams are separated into two pots.
Pot A consists of Santa Laguna (Mexico), FC Dallas (USA), Seattle Sounders (USA), Herediano (Costa Rica), Montagua (Honduras), Isidro Metapan (El Salvador) and a Mexican and Canadian team yet to be determined.
Pot B consists of Municipal (Honduras), San Francisco (Panama), Alianza (El Salvador), Defence Force (Belize), an undetermined team from Nicaragua and three teams from the Caribbean yet to be determined.
The first legs preliminary stage will be played July 26-28 with the second legs taking place August 2-4. The group stages begin August 16 and conclude on October 20.
Monterrey won the 2010-2011 CONCACAF Champions League by defeating Real Salt Lake in the final. Mexican clubs have won the last six CONCACAF Championship tournaments.
