Yankees reliever Rafael Soriano has pitched just once since May 8 due to elbow tightness, throwing an inning last Friday against the Red Sox. After that inning, Soriano felt renewed discomfort, and it didn't go away after he threw a bullpen session on Monday. Soriano is being examined by a doctor on Tuesday, and the Yankees have finally placed Soriano on the disabled list.
Rafael Soriano’s Elbow Sends Yankees Reliever To Disabled List
Given that the normally effective Soriano has 11 walks and ten strikeouts in 15 innings, there have been questions for some time, and the Yankees will take this opportunity to give Soriano’s arm some rest to see if that’s all it needs. The time off should also be good for Soriano’s head; he might not exactly relax, but he’ll probably relax a little more than he does when he’s pitching.
To replace Soriano on the roster, the Yankees have called up outfielder Chris Dickerson. They had been holding an extra reliever while Soriano was sidelined. Dickerson is nothing but depth and hasn't gotten off to a great start with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but he has good career numbers in AAA and more than 500 plate appearances of Major League experience. He's starting in right field Tuesday night.
