The Mexican Primera has drastically altered the way they will play it season, conduct its playoff and crown its champion. The three-division regular season has been scrapped in place of a single table that will send the top eight finishers into two four-team groups. Those four teams groups will then play each other once at home and on the road. The top team in each four-team group will then meet in a two-legged championship.

The new format will be significantly different than how other leagues conduct their playoffs, and is much more similar to various tournaments around the world, including the World Cup. FMF State of Mind, SB Nation’s Mexican soccer blog, offered some explanation:
The changes mean more teams will be involved deeper into the season. The new format will also increase the total number of postseason games (from 14 to 26). TV revenues, threatened by Carlos Slim’s highly publicized battled with Televisa, will be given a welcome boost.
