Randy Flores Signs On With New York Yankees

Veteran lefty reliever Randy Flores signed with the Padres last February, inking a minor-league contract because he saw the potential opportunity to return to the majors. However, that contract came with a May 15 opt-out date in case Flores hadn't yet been promoted. So when the deadline came and went without a promotion, Flores declared himself a free agent.

He's not a free agent anymore. After some speculation that the Yankees might be interested, Flores has indeed signed with New York on another minor-league deal that will send him to AAA. But with Pedro Feliciano and Damaso Marte on the disabled list and Boone Logan serving as the only lefty out of the pen, the Yankees may call on Flores before too long.

One of the interesting things about Randy Flores is that, for a lefty reliever, he isn’t that effective against lefties, as they’ve batted 43-for-146 off him in the bigs since 2008, with 31 strikeouts and 20 walks. But veterans are veterans and Flores even has some playoff experience, so it won’t be a surprise to see him pitching in the Bronx this summer.
