Seattle Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez, who has not played at all this season and spent some time at the Mayo Clinic after suffering from a stomach disorder during spring training, will be activated Wednesday, according to mlb.com, in time for Seattle’s game at home against the Twins tonight.
Mariners’ Franklin Gutierrez To Be Activated Wednesday
The stomach problem was diagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome, which is a disease that can be controlled by medication.
Gutierrez, who hit .245 with 12 HR, 64 RBI and 25 stolen bases in 2010, has completed a rehab stint at Triple-A Tacoma; in 40 at-bats there, he hit .275. He’ll resume his regular position as the Mariners’ starting center fielder.
To make room for Gutierrez on the roster, the Mariners optioned righthanded reliever Tom Wilhelmsen to Double-A Jackson, where he will be converted into a starter. The move will, temporarily at least, leave the Mariners with a six-man bullpen. They’ve pretty much been doing that anyway, as Wilhelmsen has thrown only twice in the last 24 days.
