Monday night, after yet another rocky outing, Diamondbacks starter Armando Galarraga got a little chippy when a reporter asked him if his slot in the rotation might be in jeopardy.
Diamondbacks Cutting Ties With Armando Galarraga
Well, it really, really was. Steve Gilbert late Tuesday night:
RHP Armando Galarraga designated for assignment. 10 days to trade, outright or release him.
Just slightly less than one year ago, Galarraga pitched the most famous one-hitter in major-league history. That game got him a Corvette and a book deal (well, technically half a book deal but who’s counting).
What that game didn’t give him was the juice that’s been missing from his right arm for some time now. Since the Almost Perfect Game, Galarraga’s gone 5-12 with a 5.09. Worse, his ERA with the Diamondbacks this season is 5.91, and he’s shown absolutely no signs of improvement through his eight starts.
Who takes his place in the rotation? Micah Owings hasn't been terrible with Triple-A Reno. Aaron Heilman was a rotation candidate during spring training, but has a 7.59 ERA in the bullpen. Barry Enright just lost his starting job and is now pitching in Reno. Rather than speculate further, we'll just say the Diamondbacks have a classic dilemma on their hands: choices, but all of them unattractive.
