The San Francisco Giants signed the versatile Mark DeRosa to a two-year contract before the 2010 season. DeRosa had his greatest success with the 2007 and 2008 Chicago Cubs, who he helped lead to two division titles by playing second base, third base and various outfield spots. The Giants hoped he could help them do the same.
Giants’ Mark DeRosa Injured -- Again
The Giants won the World Series last year, but with little help from DeRosa, who played in only 26 games after he suffered a wrist injury that eventually required surgery.
The same injury was bothering him this year and he had off-and-on playing time in April. Returning to the lineup on May 10 after another DL stint, he did not have a hit in six games started, and then Wednesday night in Los Angeles, aggravated the wrist injury on a check swing, according to mlb.com:
Though DeRosa’s playing status was initially announced as day to day, manager Bruce Bochy said of the 36-year-old, “It looks like he’s going to be out for a while.” Bochy added that DeRosa will return to San Francisco on Thursday to be examined by physicians.
The Giants will fill in by having Miguel Tejada move over from shortstop to third base (filling in for another injured player, Pablo Sandoval) and having Mike Fontenot play shortstop.
