On Sunday, Cardinals third baseman David Freese was hit in the hand by a Scott Linebrink pitch and soon had to be removed from the game because of the resulting injury. It was revealed later that Freese had a broken bone, and after some speculation that he might have to go under the knife, now we have confirmation. Says Brian Stull:
David Freese Injury Requires Surgery
Clean break for David Freese, but he will still have surgery. Not sure how long he'll be out.
While there's not yet a specific timeline, Freese is expected to be out for a month, at the very least. With the Cardinals also playing without Skip Schumaker right now, the infield is stretched a bit thin, with Nick Punto, Daniel Descalso, Ryan Theriot and Tyler Greene sharing three positions.
At the time of his injury, Freese owned the Cardinals' third-highest OPS, so he will be missed. Fortunately, with Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday, Lance Berkman and Colby Rasmus in the middle of the lineup, the team shouldn't be starved for offense.
