In the early 19th century, Hall J. Kelley schemed to re-name the Cascade Range as the Presidential Range. He intended to re-name Mount Hood as Mount Adams, but cartographers mistakenly put the label about 40 miles too far north. Where, by luck and coincidence, there was a major volcano ready to take the name. This is kind of like that.
