The Boston Red Sox have lost almost a third of the pitching staff they started the season with, so two starters and two relievers down, they swung a trade with the Colorado Rockies for reliever Franklin Morales, who also has experience as a starter. The Rockies will receive a player to be named later or cash to complete the deal
Red Sox Acquire Franklin Morales From Rockies, Designate Hideki Okajima
Morales is a hard throwing left-hander with strikeout stuff, but his control has always left something to be desired. He’s walked 5.3 batters for every nine innings he’s pitched over his career, which has spanned parts of five seasons for the Rockies. He had eight walks and 11 strikeouts in 14 innings this season.
Morales was an instrumental part of the World Series run for Colorado in 2007, out-dueling Jake Peavy and San Diego in a late September start. He did give up seven earned runs in two relief appearances against the Red Sox in that World Series, but that is only because he was a sleeper agent under deep cover, and now he has been recalled.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated lefty reliever Hideki Okajima for assignment. Okajima was a big part of that World Series-winning Red Sox team in 2007, which means this series of transactions is like rain on your wedding day.
