Wednesday night, Blue Jays starter Jesse Litsch had his worst start of the season, allowing six runs in five innings to the Rays while walking three batters. It was an uncharacteristically lousy outing for the righty, leading to some speculation that something was wrong, and now we have confirmation that something is wrong indeed, as the Blue Jays have placed Litsch on the disabled list with a shoulder impingement.
Jesse Litsch Injury: Blue Jays Starter On DL With Shoulder Impingement
Utility player Mike McCoy has been recalled to take Litsch's place on the roster. McCoy has ten hits in 42 at-bats with the Jays on the year. Litsch's place in the rotation, meanwhile, will go to Carlos Villanueva, who will start Monday against the Yankees after 13 relief appearances. Over those appearances, he's posted a 1.48 ERA in 24-1/3 innings, with 21 strikeouts.
The Jays initially considered having Litsch just skip one start to let the swelling in his shoulder subside, but ultimately they wound up going the safer route. On the year, he owns a 4.66 ERA in eight starts, with twice as many strikeouts as walks.
