Jose Bautista’s demolition of major league pitching is unrelenting. On Saturday afternoon, MLB’s home-run leader hit two more over the fence, and the Blue Jays won the second game of their interleague series against the Astros 7-5.
Blue Jays Vs. Astros: Jose Bautista Belts Two More Homers To Help Deliver 7-5 Win
Bautista’s first home run, a three-run blast, came in the sixth inning against Astros starter Brett Myers while down 4-0. His second, a solo shot in the eighth, was his 18th home run of the young season.
Bautista has missed a few games this season; in the 37 games he has played, he’s set a pace that would give him 78 home runs over 162 games. As it stands, supposing Bautista were to play through the remainder of the Blue Jays schedule and remain on the same pace, he would finish the season with 73 home runs.
These calculations, of course, are little more than daydream-y mathematical exercises at this juncture, but Bautista’s contributions of late are something to behold. After his 3-for-4 game on Saturday, Bautista’s got an astronomical 1.350 OPS.
The Blue Jays wouldn’t have won without him Saturday, and with a healthy Bautista in the lineup, the 23-22 Jays, who presently stand a mere two games out of first in the A.L. East, have plenty of reason for optimism.
