Tigers Place Brad Thomas On DL, Recall Charlie Furbush

Tigers lefthanded reliever Brad Thomas, who had a solid year in 2010 for Detroit with a 3.89 ERA in 49 appearances (including two starts), was off to a rough start in 2011. In 12 outings this season he had posted a 9.00 ERA and 2.09 WHIP; he gave up 17 hits and six walks in only 11 appearances.

Thomas pitched only three times in May and had not appeared in 10 days, when the Tigers announced this morning via Twitter that he was being placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 11, with left elbow inflammation.

Recalled from Triple-A Toledo to the Tigers bullpen is Charlie Furbush, who has been in the Detroit farm system since 2007; with the Mud Hens this year Furbush was 4-3 in eight starts with a 2.91 ERA. It's likely that Furbush will be added to the Tigers bullpen, although Phil Coke could be sent back to the bullpen with Furbush joining the Detroit rotation.
