Mocking the Draft wants to introduce you to an new article series taking a closer look at each team’s draft workings. The WarRoom articles will give you a glimpse at the recent draft history and the decision-making structure of each NFL team. We will also include our thoughts about the structure and draft history.
New York Giants NFL Draft WarRoom
Offensive Scheme: The Giants love to run a balanced offensive attack. They are at their best when they are running the ball effectively and using play action. Having a physical offensive line is key as the power running game is often featured. For several seasons, this team as utilized a running back by committee approach using guys that have complementary running styles.
While the Giants rely on the running game, they are not afraid to mix it up and take shots down the field. Eli Manning has shown the ability to stretch the field with a quick strike. He has also proven that he can put a team on his back and carry them to a victory. However, turnovers continue to be a problem and are what ultimately set this team back.
Defensive Scheme: Defensive line play is the key to the Giants defensive success. They have invested plenty of draft picks to the defensive line and expect to get results. Players like Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Mathias Kiwanuka are all expected to provide pressure.
Perry Fewell is the defensive coordinator and likes to employ the cover 2 system. However, he has been known to mix up his defenses in order to confuse the opposing offense. With the talent on the defensive line, Fewell has the ability to get creative and also drop extra men into coverage.
Thoughts: In the past 6 out of 7 drafts the Giants have used their first selection to add a defensive player. Of those 6 defensive players, 4 were defensive backs and 2 were defensive linemen. This history shows you that the Giants put a lot of emphisis on the defensive side of the football. They like to create pressure and by blitzing they put more pressure on the defensive backfield, thus the 4 early selections.
The Giants have done a nice job adding talent through the draft and typically go with the best player available. They have hit more than they have missed. However, there are several 2nd round selections such as Sinorice Moss, William Beatty, and Clint Sintim that have not worked out. But that is overshadowed by selections like Umenyiora, Smith, and Snee.
