After spending two full seasons of the manager of Chelsea FC, Carlo Ancelotti has been relieved of his duties by the English Premier League club. In his first season as Chelsea's manager, Ancelotti managed to win a domestic league and cup double, but this season was not a success for his club. They finished second in the English Premier League, but on only 71 points, a full nine points behind title winners Manchester United. In the 2009-2010 English Premier League season, 71 points would have only been good enough for fourth place.

Additionally, Chelsea were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the quarterfinals by Manchester United, who have progressed to the final of the competition. As Chelsea have fallen further behind their rivals, despite spending £50m on Fernando Torres and £22m on David Luiz, they felt that Ancelotti had not performed sufficiently in his duties as manager.
The club released a statement following the club's final game of the season, a loss against Everton, confirming Ancelotti's departure and thanking him for his service to the club. They also stated that no further comment would be made until a replacement was named.
