Christian ‘Chucho’ Benitez Moves From Santos Laguna To Club America, According To Report

If various reports from Spanish-language media in Mexico and the United States are to be believed, including one from the generally reputable Medio Tiempo, Ecuadorian international striker Christian Benitez will be moving from Santos Laguna to Club America after the directors of the two clubs came to an agreement on a transfer fee for the man commonly referred to as ‘Chucho.’

Benitez started his career with El Nacional in his native Ecuador before moving to Santos Laguna in 2007. He quickly made a name for himself as a lethal scorer in Mexico, leading to a deal with English side Birmingham City where they paid a fee to take Benitez on loan with an option to buy for a massive fee. Benitez did not impress in his short spell in England and he returned to Santos, where he was spectacular in the Apertura 2010. His form dipped in the Clausura 2011, mostly due to injuries but partially due to some team turmoil, but there’s no doubt that he’s one of the most lethal strikers in the world outside of Europe.

The likely odd man out in America’s lineup is Vicente Sanchez, who scored just five goals despite 18 appearances at striker in the 2011 Clausura. Chucho Benitez is seen as a potentially great compliment to Vicente Vuoso up top, and combined with winger Angel Reyna, America’s already potent attack could see a serious boost for the 2011 Apertura tournament.
