Sunday afternoon, Atlanta Braves center fielder Nate McLouth suffered an oblique injury in the fourth inning against the Angels and had to leave the game.
Nate McLouth Injury: Braves CF Forced To DL, Jordan Schafer Up From AAA
Monday afternoon, the Braves made a couple of roster moves. Mark Bowman:
Braves place McLouth on the 15-day DL and recall Jordan Schafer from Gwinnett. Schafer will be in Pittsburgh for tomorrow's game.
You might remember Schafer. In 2009, he was installed as the Braves’ Opening Day center fielder despite a track record in the minors that didn’t suggest he was ready for that job. Schafer homered in his first major-league at-bat, he homered again in his third game, and after five games he was batting .421.
After which Schafer found his level, and then some, hitting .176/.289/.216 in 45 games before getting sent down, and he spent most of the rest of the season on the DL. Last season was a recovery season, and Schafer batted .201 in half a season of Triple-A. He’s been little better this season at that level, with a .256/.309/.323 line, and figures to see most of his action with the Braves as a late-innings defensive replacement.
In McLouth's absence, Joe Mather -- who's off to a good start this season -- figures to get most of the starts in center field.
