Murray State Racers Basketball Hires Steve Prohm As New Head Coach

After former Murray State Racers head men’s basketball coach Billy Kennedy left Kentucky for the Texas A&M Aggies job, Murray State obviously had a large vacancy to fill. They have decided to stay in-house with their new hire, announcing Monday that assistant coach Steve Prohm would be promoted to head men’s basketball coach, taking Kennedy’s place. Prohm has been an assistant coach at Murray State for five years and has served as an assistant under Kennedy for 12 years.

Athletic Director Allen Ward introduced Prohm this afternoon. Ward said, regarding Prohm’s hiring:

"It didn't take long to realize that Steve Prohm was the right man to lead this program and build upon the success we have enjoyed the past few years," Ward said. "He's a bright, up-and-coming young coach with impeccable character that is fully prepared for this opportunity."

Prohm served as an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana University, Centenary University, and Tulane University before joining Kennedy’s staff at Murray State in 2006. While Prohm has worked as an assistant with the Racers, the team has achieved two regular season Ohio Valley Conference titles as well as a bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they upset Vanderbilt in 2010.
