Dallas Cowboys NFL Draft WarRoom
Offensive Scheme: Jason Garrett is back again running the offense but has now has the responsibility of running the entire team. Garrett did a nice job at the end of last season adding discipline and accountability to the Cowboys. However, he needs to keep his head focused on the offense which has under performed. The offense features a lot of weapons but struggles with consistency. They like to run a balanced attack but at times will rely to heavily on the passing game. This season will depend on Tony Romo and his ability to spread the football around to all the playmakers.
Defensive Scheme: Rob Ryan’s addition maybe the most underrated coaching change in the NFL. Ryan is an excellent defensive coach that knows how to get the most out of the players on his roster. Last season in Cleveland, Ryan turned a roster with limited talent into a top rated defense. Look for Ryan to utilize all the weapons at his disposal and create a ton of pressure on the quarterback.
Thoughts: The Cowboys have done a solid job in the draft but each year there is a selection that makes you scratch your head. Jerry Jones is the decision maker and often makes executive decisions selecting players that he favors. For example, Jones loved Felix Jones and despite an already talented backfield he selected him in the 1st round.
The strategy seems to be adding the best player available according to Jerry Jones’ board. It is key to understand that it is based on Jones’ board because there are many that question his eye for talent. The fact remains that this team has not won a Super Bowl since 1995 which is a long drought for this aggressive and proud franchise.
