Brewers Vs. Nationals: Zack Greinke Pitches, Hits Milwaukee To Victory

The Brewers got off to a bad start this year and you could hear the "Prince Fielder is going to be traded" rumblings all the way from Milwaukee. Come to think of it, you can hear rumblings every time Prince Fielder takes the field in Milwaukee.

And after losing their seventh in a row on May 6, those rumblings got louder and louder and louder and ...

Well, after that the Brewers got hot. With their sixth straight win Wednesday afternoon, 6-4 over the Nationals, Milwaukee has gone 14-4 in their last 18 games and stands three games behind the NL Central-leading Cardinals going into tonight's action. Which makes people -- like pretty much every fan of an NL Central team outside of MLB's smallest city, Milwaukee -- just dislike the Brewers that much more.

Don't have enough to dislike? Zack Greinke not only threw seven solid innings, striking out 10, for his third win of the year, but he hit a home run off Jason Marquis in the fifth inning which gave the Brewers a 4-3 lead, a lead they never relinquished. Greinke now has six career hits: two singles, two doubles, two home runs ... and two career RBI. He should just retire right now, so as not to ruin that perfect symmetry. Actually, a lot of the Brewers' renaissance is due to Greinke, who has solidified the starting rotation, as well as the return of Corey Hart, who smacked three home runs and drove in seven runs Monday night, and the usual home-run hitting by Fielder (11) and Ryan Braun (12). The Brewers have now won nine straight games at home and have tied the Indians for the majors' best home record, at 19-6.

So if you really hate the Brewers, like these posters on an HVAC forum, this isn't a good time for you. If you're a Brewers fan, you ought to be excited about your team's chances to move atop the NL Central soon. Milwaukee has the day off Thursday before hosting the defending champion Giants at Miller Park in a three-game weekend series.
