During a game on Thursday, Reds starter Homer Bailey injured his shoulder while batting in the top of the fourth, and had to be removed after throwing the bottom. The team initially described his problem as "shoulder spasms," which isn't too bad, but Bailey was sent to the team doctor for further examination. Upon further examination, it turns out the problem is something a little different:
Homer Bailey Has Shoulder Sprain, Lands On DL
Homer Bailey has a sprained shoulder, trainer Paul Lessard said. Front office will make call on DL.
If you look at Bailey’s velocity from his Thursday start, it’s evident that something was wrong. Courtesy of Brooks Baseball:
You see his fastball hanging out between 90-92, and then in the fourth inning it drops to 86-88. That kind of velocity drop is a major red flag, so it’s clear that Bailey’s shoulder was bothering him and affecting his performance.
There’s no word on the severity of the sprain, and it’s possible that Bailey may avoid the disabled list. The front office is going to make that decision shortly.
