Looking to build off the momentum from Sunday's win, the Boston Red Sox faced a tough task on Monday, as the first-place Los Angeles Angels were in town and throwing the undefeated Jered Weaver at them. But the undefeated Jered Weaver ain't undefeated no more, as the Red Sox knocked him down and won 9-5.
Angels Vs. Red Sox: Clay Buchholz Bests Jered Weaver In Boston Win
Following a pregame 9/11 tribute, the Red Sox got off to a quick start, pushing a run across against Weaver in the bottom of the first on a Kevin Youkilis RBI single. But that lead would last only until the third, when Bobby Abreu singled home the tying run, and in the fifth Abreu drove in the go-ahead run.
But back came the Red Sox. With two on and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Dustin Pedroia worked a 13-pitch at-bat against Weaver, culminating in a line drive past Weaver and into center field for a two-run single that put the Red Sox ahead by one run.
They wouldn't look back. Weaver was done after six, having thrown 118 pitches, and in the bottom of the seventh the Sox scored six against relievers Hisanori Takahashi and Francisco Rodriguez, with Adrian Gonzalez doubling home three runs, Youkilis doubling home another, and David Ortiz blasting a two-run homer.
Comfortably ahead, the Red Sox watched Dan Wheeler give the Angels a few runs back, but the game never really got interesting again, and Hideki Okajima recorded the final few outs.
Clay Buchholz earned the win, allowing two runs over 6.2 innings. Weaver took his first loss by allowing three runs in six frames. His start had been pushed back due to a stomach virus, and he wasn't at his best.
The series continues on Tuesday, with Dan Haren opposing Jon Lester.
