Jack Warner Re-Elected As CONCACAF President, Unopposed

The much-maligned Trinidadian Jack Warner has been re-elected as president of CONCACAF after running unopposed. Warner won re-election in a vote at the CONCACAF congress and will continue to represent the 35 member nations in the confederation that covers North America, Central America and the Caribbean. It will be his sixth consecutive term since initially winning the post in 1990.

“I am honored to have been entrusted to lead this confederation for another four years, particularly in our 50th anniversary year,” said Warner.

Warner carries a great deal of power within FIFA as a vice-president and close ally of president Sepp Blatter. That does not mean he is immune from criticism though. In fact, few have been more criticized that Warner. He was found guilty of breaking FIFA rules by selling 2006 World Cup tickets granted to him by FIFA, although FIFA’s punishment was a mere slap on the wrist and it has been speculated that he sold tickets again for the 2010 World Cup.

Nevertheless, Warner will remain president of CONCACAF for at least one more term after his re-election. The confederation will celebrate it's 50th anniversary at this summer's Gold Cup, the CONCACAF championship tournament that will be hosted by the United States.
