On Saturday, when Anthony Swarzak limited the Angels to one hit, Swarzak was taking the place of Francisco Liriano, who was scratched from his Saturday start with a sore shoulder. Most were optimistic that Liriano would only miss one turn, and an MRI revealed simple inflammation. Liriano was to throw a bullpen on Tuesday to prepare for his next start. But Monday, word's out that Liriano hit another speed bump. Via Joe Christensen:
Francisco Liriano Still Dealing With Shoulder Discomfort; Placed On DL
Twins lefthander Francisco Liriano said his left shoulder did not feel well when he played catch before today's game against the Tigers, so he will likely miss one more start, at least.
The Twins had hoped he'd be able to test the shoulder in a bullpen session Tuesday, but that probably won't happen now, and Anthony Swarzak will likely make Thursday's start against the Royals.
There still isn’t any real worry that Liriano is badly hurt - his MRI, after all, was generally clean. From the sounds of things, it’s just taking the inflammation in his shoulder a little longer to subside than expected, so it’s possible the Twins may now elect to place Liriano on the disabled list so that they can add another pitcher to the roster in the meantime.
Update: Liriano has indeed been placed on the DL, retroactive to May 23, and Anthony Slama has been recalled. Slama will pitch in relief.
