Just 12 games into their inaugural MLS season, the Vancouver Whitecaps have fired head coach Teitur Thordarson and handed over the reigns to former DC United coach and current director of soccer operations Tom Soehn. The Whitecaps had not won since beating Toronto FC 4-2 in Week 1 and had gone 0-5-6 since.
Vancouver Whitecaps Fire Head Coach Teitur Thordarson, Tom Soehn Takes Over
The timing of the move does seem a bit odd, though, as the Whitecaps were coming off a 1-1 tie with the New York Red Bulls and were about 30 minutes away from winning the Nutrilite Canadian Championship. The Whitecaps had lost just once by more than a goal and in some ways had been playing better than many had expected of the expansion team.
Soehn has a reasonably successful coaching past. He was Peter Nowak’s top assistant at DC United from 2003-06, a period of time in which United won a MLS Cup (2004) and a Supporters’ Shield (2005). He took over as head coach in 2007 and won a Supporters’ Shield (2007) and was a U.S. Open Cup runner-up (2009).
