From the Mets' PR department, Monday:
Jose Reyes Placed On Bereavement List
Jose Reyes found out this afternoon that his grandmother passed away. He is being placed on the Bereavement List (minimum 3 days - maximum 7 days). Reyes is flying home to Santiago, Dominican Republic. His roster replacement has not yet been named.
We won’t even pretend to begin to guess whether Reyes will miss three days, or seven.
Instead, this is a convenient time to mention that Reyes is playing better this season than he’s ever played before; according to FanGraphs Wins Above Replacement (fWAR), Reyes has been the National League’s best player in 2011. Which makes it both easier and harder for the Mets to trade him before his contract expires at the end of this season.
Reyes has started all 52 of the Mets' games entering Monday. But young Ruben Tejada started 24 games at shortstop in Reyes' absence last year, and figures to get most of the action this time around.
