Barcelona captain Carles Puyol is to undergo knee surgery this week to (hopefully) correct the problem with his knee that has kept him to the sidelines for much of the club's hugely successful 2010/11 campaign. The centre half has been out of action for most of 2011, making a few appearances in the Champions League but hardly any elsewhere, and was limited to three minutes as a substitute when Barcelona lifted the trophy against Manchester United at Wembley.
Barcelona Captain Carles Puyol To Have Knee Surgery
According to a statement on the Barcelona website, Puyol is to have the operation on Wednesday:
Carles Puyol will be operated on at 1400 (local time) on Wednesday, June 1 at the Clinica Quiron to resolve the problems he’s been suffering with his left knee. Following the operation, Doctors Ricard Pruna and Ramon Cugat will speak to the media at the Ricard Maxenchs press room at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona may have won an impressive double this season, but without their captain at full fitness they have at times looked decidedly shaky at the back. the timetable for Puyol's recovery is unclear, but having him back in time for the pre-season would be ideal. The club can't afford to have the defender at anything less than 100% as Real Madrid start to nip at their heels once more next campaign.
