Everybody always pays a lot of attention to regular free agents, but the international variety get way less love. But the Texas Rangers just made a big international splash, signing Cuban defector Leonys Martin to a five-year contract.
Leonys Martin Signs Five-Year Contract With Rangers
The contract has a total value of $15.5 million, including a $5 million signing bonus, and is a contract of the Major League variety, meaning that Martin has been placed on the team's 40-man roster. Ramon Aguero was dropped from the roster to make room.
Martin, a 23-year-old center fielder, is already working out at the Rangers’ complex in Arizona. According to the various scouting reports, he runs exceptionally well and puts his speed to good use in the outfield. His bat isn’t so far along and he doesn’t pack much in the way of power potential, but could still be a solid support player with some development.
Martin could reach Class AA Frisco by the end of May or beginning of June, and if he rises quickly through the system, Julio Borbon might start feeling the pressure.
