The Jonathan Broxton saga requires little explanation at this point. I think everybody has a pretty good idea of how inconsistent he’s been for just about the last calendar year. Now, about a week ago, Don Mattingly said Broxton was dealing with a little elbow soreness. On Tuesday, Broxton was brought into a tie game and removed after walking two of three batters. One figured something had to be up, and sure enough, something is up. Writes Ken Gurnick:
Jonathan Broxton Shut Down Due To Elbow Pain
Jonathon Broxton has been shut down with elbow pain, Don Mattingly said.
We don't know the severity of Broxton's discomfort. We don't know how long the Dodgers intend to shut him down. But it isn't hard to imagine that Broxton could be sidelined for quite some time, so this is a story you should continue to follow. Maybe the elbow's been the root cause of Broxton's struggles all along. Maybe it hasn't. But there's definitely something going on in there that needs to get better regardless.
With Broxton out, expect more high-leverage exposure for Vicente Padilla and Hong-Chih Kuo. Not that Kuo's been a smooth sail down the river himself in the early going.
