A day after the Atlanta Braves roughed up the Milwaukee Brewers for 16 runs in one doubleheader, the two teams locked horns in a pitchers’ duel on Thursday night at Turner Field, with the Braves finally breaking through in the eighth inning, winning 2-1 to complete a four-game sweep.
Brewers Vs. Braves: Brandon Beachy, Bullpen Help Atlanta Complete The Sweep
Braves starter Brandon Beachy was fantastic, giving up one unearned run while striking out nine and walking one over six innings. The only run for the Brewers scored on a Jonathan Lucroy sacrifice fly that followed an error and a Corey Hart single.
Beachy's counterpart on the Brewers, Shaun Marcum, was just as stingy, allowing a single run and striking out eight in seven full innings. Marcum’s only mistake was an 0-2 fastball in the second inning that hung up over the plate, and Eric Hinske drove the pitch into the right-field stands for a solo home run.
The game was left to the bullpens, and the Braves’ bullpen combined for three innings of scoreless ball. Kameron Loe wasn’t as lucky, though, leaving a two-seam fastball over the heart of the plate against Martin Prado, who ripped it into the left-field bleachers. Craig Kimbrel pitched an uneventful ninth for the save, and the Braves completed the impressive home sweep.
The Braves will travel to Philadelphia for an exciting series against their divisional rivals, while the Brewers will continue their road trip in St. Louis.
