Carroll Rogers with some unhappy news about Atlanta’s bullpen:
Braves’ Peter Moylan Probably Ticketed For Back Surgery
Braves reliever Peter Moylan has continued to feel pain in his lower back despite two weeks of rest and an epidural and is resigned to the fact that surgery is likely.
Moylan was examined by an Atlanta surgeon Thursday and is headed to Los Angeles Monday to get a second opinion from renowned spine surgeon Dr. Robert Watkins.
"Once we have his opinion we'll decide what we're going to do, but it looks like surgery is imminent," Moylan said.
First, we’re going to miss a relief pitcher who knows what “imminent” means.
Second, the Braves will miss a relief pitcher with Moylan’s considerable skills.
Moylan might not be quite as good as his 2.61 ERA suggests, but he's really tough on right-handed hitters -- if we used the term ROOGY, Moylan would be one -- and he very rarely gives up the home run. As good as Atlanta's bullpen has been this season, it would be even better if some of Moylan's innings hadn't instead gone to Scott Linebrink and Cristhian Martinez.
And we’re talking about the whole season. If Moylan does need surgery, we won’t see his sinker or his vocabulary on the mound again until next spring.
