The Boston Bruins advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 1992 on Friday night, wrapping up a sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers. They might move on to face the Tampa Bay Lightning without a pretty crucial player, however.
Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron Suffered Concussion In Game 4 After Hit From Claude Giroux
General manager Peter Chiarelli announced on Saturday morning that forward Patrice Bergeron suffered a concussion in Game 4 when he took a big hit from Flyers forward Claude Giroux.
There’s no video online of the hit, but the general consensus seems to be that it was a clean play, although Chiarelli called it “a shade late.” Giroux and Bergeron actually seemed to collide head-to-head, and Bergeron left the ice immediately. He never returned to the ice. Giroux was fine.
Chiarelli called the concussion a mild one. He said there's no timetable for Bergeron's return and that he believes Tyler Seguin will be get a chance to fill in. Seguin, the No. 2 overall pick in last year's draft, has yet to play this postseason.
Bergeron has 12 points in the playoffs, which leads the team. 10 of those are assists, and he's crucial in the Bruins attack. His presence allows for that secondary layer behind the B's top line of Nathan Horton, Milan Lucic and David Krejci, and without Bergeron, it's presumably much easier to stop Boston in terms of offense.
