Mike Williamson Injury Sees Newcastle United Defender Ruled Out Until Summer

Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson will be out for the rest of the season after breaking his a bone in his forearm during training on Thursday. The 27-year-old was apparently working out in the gym when a 'freak injury' occurred, and he's already undergone surgery to correct the problem, but according to manager Alan Pardew his return date is still questionable - he may even miss the beginning of the preseason, which could cause issues well into the 2011/12 campaign.

Robert Bishop, of SB Nation’s Newcastle blog Coming Home Newcastle. is concerned for Williamson but ultimately doesn’t think this will have any real bearing on the rest of the Magpies’ season. That would, of course, be an entirely different story had the defender gone down with an injury a few months earlier, or if Newcastle were much closer to the drop.

[T]his injury (and the many, many others that have plagued the Toon this year) highlights the importance of grabbing points early. There would surely be panic on Tyneside if Newcastle were sitting a little lower in the table. As it stands, the absence of Williamson, while unfortunate, should have little impact on the team’s standing on May 23.

With Newcastle winning 2-1 over Birmingham on Saturday, this is even less of a problem, and arm injuries aren't typically too difficult for defenders to overcome. Williamson had started 28 games for the club in all competitions this year after being transfered from Portsmouth in January 2010.
