Preakness Stakes 2011: Will Animal Kingdom Earn Triple Crown’s Second Jewel?

Now that Animal Kingdom has won the 2011 Kentucky Derby, all eyes turn to his next potential prize: the 2011 Preakness Stakes.

The 136th Preakness Stakes will be run on May 21st at Pimlico in Baltimore. Animal Kingdom and all of his competitors from the Derby will have two weeks to recover before the Preakness, which covers a mile and three-16ths, or nine and a half furlongs. Post time for the 2011 Preakness Stakes is tentatively 6:25 p.m. Eastern.

The last Kentucky Derby winner to also win the Preakness was Big Brown in 2008. The last horse to win the Triple Crown, placing first at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes, was Affirmed in 1978.
