The Boston Red Sox have lost a veteran backup shortstop, and gained an exceptionally young one. Gordon Edes:
Marco Scutaro Placed On DL, Replaced By Prospect Jose Iglesias
Red Sox shortstop Marco Scutaro, who was undergoing an MRI Sunday morning for what was believed to be a strained oblique muscle, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. To take his place, Boston activated 21-year-old shortstop Jose Iglesias, who had been summoned from Scranton, Pa., where the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox had played Saturday afternoon.
Iglesias is regarded as the Red Sox's Shortstop of the Future, though of course it looks like Jed Lowrie will have something to say about that. Iglesias will back up Lowrie, just as Scutaro did.
Only 21, Iglesias is playing just his second season in Organized Baseball after defecting from Cuba. Regarded as a wizard with the glove, Iglesias held his own as a hitter last season in Class AA, but has struggled this season with Pawtucket. Sunday, Iglesias made his major-league debut with an inning of defense and fielded a ground ball to record the last out in Boston’s 9-5 win over the Twins.
