Nobody feels that this lockout is a positive situation but some players might be gaining a upper hand. NFL rookies are not able to work out with coaches or even officially receive playbooks. However, they are able to join the player lead workouts and start to make an impression on teammates. They are also able to start learning some possible plays and tips from the vets attending the workouts.
How the Lockout is Benefiting Rookies

The Rookies are gaining a slight advantage over potential free agent signings. They are able to get a jump start on the potential competition and build meaningful relationships. Don't understatement the importance of on the field continuity. The best example is the Minnesota Vikings quarterback situation where Christian Ponder has taken the initiative and organize some workouts. This show of leadership will go a long way once camp begins.
The lockout is stunting the growth of rookies but it is also hurting the potential free agents. While the advantaged gained by the rookies now is minimal, it will still have an impact as training camps begin. Keep an eye on how this situation plays out and if the lockout did indeed assist the rookies.
