Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez isn't in the lineup on Wednesday. He wasn't in the lineup on Tuesday, nor was he in the lineup on Monday, because on Sunday he aggravated a back problem that's been bothering him for a month. Despite Ramirez's unsettling symptoms, the Marlins decided to take things day by day, but now it looks like they'll make a decision Friday about placing Ramirez on the disabled list.
Hanley Ramirez Injury: Back Problems May Force Marlins Shortstop To DL
With his bench already short as it is, manager Edwin Rodriguez said the Marlins will decide Friday whether to place shortstop Hanley Ramirez on the disabled list.
“We can’t keep going with only one shortstop,” Edwin said before this afternoon’s game. “Pretty soon we have to make a decision.”
Ramirez says he’s feeling better, but he’s limited, and when you have a guy with lower back pain and tingling in his leg, that’s usually a guy who needs at least a week or two of rest. Signs, then, are pointing to Ramirez going on the DL, unless he makes a swift recovery in the next couple of days.
For as long as Ramirez is out, the shortstop job will be held down by Emilio Bonifacio. A DL stint would allow the Marlins to promote infielder Osvaldo Martinez from AAA New Orleans as depth.
