Rookie Quarterbacks Making Good Early Impressions

Normally at this stage of the offseason we would have had a rookie camp and some OTAs but due to the labor problems none have taken place. Instead we are seeing the players organizing workouts that for the most part are closed to the media. However, the media is a resourceful bunch and have found ways to bring us some news.

The biggest trend I have noticed from these workouts is the positive reviews some rookie quarterbacks are gaining. Cam Newton, Christian Ponder, and Jake Locker have all made positive impressions on their respective teams.

Newton drew praise from the vets for his hard work and humble attitude. He has also shown a decent grasp of the playbook meaning he has spent time reviewing the plays. This is a promising sign as one of the biggest question marks surrounding Newton was his drive and work ethic.

Many of the Titans players feel good about Jake Locker. Running back Chris Johnson stated that he fully expects Locker to be the starting quarterback when the season opens. Locker has been very active and asking a lot of questions something that isn't a major surprise.

Ponder might have made the biggest impact as he was responsible for organizing some of the Viking workouts. His initiative surely won over some of the vets as well as help them build some continuity. Ponder will be in a battle for the starting position.

These steps should not be overlooked because any progress now will surely help once training camp begins. Any development made now could impact free agency as these teams may be less likely to bring in a vet.
