Ryan Zimmerman hasn't played for the Nationals since April 9. First, he was simply hurt. Then he had to undergo abdominal surgery that pushed back his timeline. After the operation, Zimmerman was supposed to miss roughly the next six weeks, putting him on pace to re-join the Nationals in the middle of June. So where is he now?
Ryan Zimmerman Injury: Nationals Star Nearly Back With Team
Ryan Zimmerman won't play tonight. Tomorrow, he'll continue his rehab in Syracuse. For now, expect him to return Tuesday at Nats Park.
So Zimmerman is looking to come back on June 14, which is about as mid-June as it gets. He’s currently on a minor league rehab assignment, during which he’s batted 6-for-12. He’s feeling good, he’s looking good, and, finally, he’s almost back in uniform.
For weeks, now, third base in Washington has been held down mostly by Jerry Hairston Jr., with a pinch of Alex Cora. Hairston has posted a .653 OPS, which isn't terrible, but Zimmerman will be vastly superior both at the plate and in the field, so Nats fans can look forward to an enormous improvement.
