The Virginia Cavaliers needed a Sunday evening win over UC Irvine to send themselves to the 2011 College World Series, but the Anteaters refused to go quietly. UC Irvine stole a 6-4 victory thanks to a three-run eighth inning that included a two-run double by DH Jordan Leyland. UVA was up 3-0 as late as the fifth inning and 4-3 in the top of the eighth, but couldn't hang on.
NCAA Baseball Super Regionals 2011, Virginia Vs. UC Irvine Final Score: Anteaters Force Game 3
Game 3 will be played Monday in Charlottesville. Virginia, the overall No. 1 seed, needs the win to join the North Carolina Tar Heels, Vanderbilt Commodores and Florida Gators in an all-southeastern (so far) CWS lineup.
Andrew Thurman takes the victory for the Anteaters (can’t say it often enough!) after allowing just one run in four innings, and Branden Kline sustains the loss after giving up two late earned runs.
